Parvovirus information

What is Parvovirus?

Canine parvovirus, is commonly known as “parvo” and is a virus that attacks the intestinal tract (passage way from mouth to anus) and sometimes the heart. It is a very resistant (strong) virus; able to withstand heat, cold and most common disinfectants.

How is it transmitted?

Parvo is transmitted through the faeces and vomit of infected dogs and puppies. The virus can live in faeces for about two weeks and can exist in the environment (like floors or cages) for many months. It is easily transmitted on the hands, clothes or shoes.

How is parvo prevented?

Vaccination is the best way to prevent parvo. Dogs that roam are more likely to come into contact with the virus. If you have had parvo on your property, the cleaning of your property with bleach, not getting another dog for at least 6 months and fully vaccinating your dog gives it the best chance at avoiding parvo.

What dogs get it?

Both puppies and dogs can get parvovirus, especially if they have no vaccinations and walk in the community (like at the dog park or on the sidewalk) or interact with other dogs.

What are the signs?

Initial signs are loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, lethargy, fever, depression. Often there is bad-smelling, yellow coloured faeces or diarrhoea with blood. Some dogs show a few signs and recover quickly, others become severely ill and may die. Signs can appear 3-12 days after exposure.

How is parvo treated?

Treatment can be needed for several days and involve hospitalisation, IV fluids, medication to control the vomiting/diarrhoea and any secondary infections. Treatment is often not successful as parvo is a serious illness.

Vaccination information

Potential vaccination reactions and what to do

A small swelling, up to 5 mm in diameter, may be observed at the site of injection. Occasionally this swelling may be hard and painful and last for up to 3 days post injection. Some dogs may be more tired than normal for up to a day after vaccination.

Please contact Manukau After Hours Veterinary Clinic if you notice facial swelling, severe itching, severe lethargy, vomiting or diarrhoea occurring shortly after vaccination.

Follow up 2nd dose

Puppies <16 weeks old: Revaccinate every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age

Dogs >16 weeks age: A second dose in 2 to 4 weeks

Your dog will require an additional vaccination for complete protection. Please contact one of the clinics listed below to arrange your dog's next vaccination. Keep your dog away from open public spaces and unvaccinated dogs until 1 week after their final vaccination.
